The Saramacca Canal Lock and Sluice Rehabilitation Project in Suriname is a national key water conservancy project funded by the World Bank, located in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, with a total investment of US$35 million. The core content of the project includes the reconstruction of 5 sluices and the rehabilitation of 2 locks, supporting the construction of reinforced concrete structures, steel sheet pile driving, electromechanical equipment installation and other works, aiming to repair aging water conservancy facilities and eliminate potential safety hazards. In January 2026, the civil works of the project were fully completed, and it is now in the stage of electromechanical equipment installation and commissioning.
As a core water conservancy hub in Suriname, the Saramacca Canal undertakes three key functions: flood control and drainage, water resource allocation, and inland waterway navigation in the Paramaribo area, directly ensuring the safety of local residents' lives and property as well as the stability of agriculture and commercial logistics. The 300kW diesel generator sets purchased this time will serve as emergency and standby power supplies for the project, providing continuous and stable power for lock operation, water pump operation and on-site construction, ensuring the reliable operation of water conservancy facilities around the clock.
