I. Project Overview
(I) Project Introduction
The Malawi Shire Valley Transformation Project is located in Chikwawa District, southern Malawi, in the lower Shire River Valley about 60 km from Blantyre, and is undertaken by the International Company of Sinohydro Bureau 9 Co., Ltd. The core construction contents include the construction of MC1 main canal, MC2 branch canal, 3 siphon projects, 172 structural building projects and supporting water supply projects. The project aims to build a complete gravity irrigation system covering over 43,000 hectares of farmland, helping local agriculture transform from rain-fed to efficient irrigation mode.
(II) Project Significance
Livelihood Improvement: Upon completion, the project will solve farmland irrigation and safe drinking water problems for 220,000 people in southern Malawi, significantly improving local residents' quality of life and consolidating the bottom line of livelihood .
Agricultural Upgrade: Promote the transformation of local agricultural modernization. It is expected to increase the average annual income of farmers in the project area from about US$75 to US$122, and grain output by 47%-72%, enhancing agricultural risk resistance.
Economic Development: Improve regional water conservancy infrastructure, drive the development of agricultural, processing, trade and other industrial chains, and inject impetus into the sustainable economic growth of Malawi.
China-Africa Cooperation: As a model project of practical China-Africa cooperation, it deepens cooperation between China and Malawi in infrastructure, energy and other fields, demonstrating the responsibility of Chinese enterprises in helping Africa's development.
