A diesel generator set is a compact power generation unit. It utilizes a diesel engine as the prime mover to drive an alternator, converting diesel fuel into electrical energy. The complete unit typically comprises the diesel engine, alternator, control panel, fuel tank, starting battery (or accumulator), protective devices, and emergency switchgear.
(1) Adequate Ventilation: The installation site must be well-ventilated. Ensure sufficient air inlet provisions at the alternator end and an effective air outlet at the diesel engine end. The outlet opening area must be at least 1.5 times the radiator core area.
(2) Clean, Non-Corrosive Environment: Maintain a clean surrounding area. Avoid placing items nearby that generate corrosive gases or vapors (e.g., acids, alkalis). Where feasible, install a fire suppression system.
(3) Exhaust System Installation (Indoor Use):
Route the exhaust pipe outdoors.
The pipe diameter must be ≥ the exhaust outlet diameter of the silencer/muffler.
Minimize bends: Use no more than 3 elbows to ensure smooth exhaust flow.
Downward Slope: Install the pipe with a 5-10° downward slope away from the engine to prevent rainwater ingress.
Vertical Exhaust: If the exhaust pipe exits vertically upwards, a rain cap must be installed.
(4) Solid, Level Foundation:
When using a concrete foundation, verify its levelness using a spirit level before mounting the set.
Secure the unit to the foundation using specialized anti-vibration mounts or foundation bolts.
(5) Electrical Grounding & Bonding:
The generator set frame must have a reliable protective earth (ground) connection.
For generators requiring Neutral-Earth bonding (neutral grounding), this must be performed ONLY by qualified personnel.
Install appropriate lightning protection devices.
CRITICAL: NEVER use the mains (utility power) grounding point for the generator's neutral-earth bond.
(6) Secure Mains-Generator Switching:
The transfer switch facilitating changeover between the generator and mains power must be highly reliable to prevent dangerous backfeed.
The wiring integrity and functionality of the transfer switch must be inspected and approved by the local power supply authority.
